Bark Tanned Sheepskin | Erik

$400.00

This premium bark-tanned sheepskin will make a beautiful legacy textile in your home. Erik measures 45 × 30” with 5” of soft, black, brown and grey curly fiber. This pure Gotland* sheepskin is a real showstopper and will change the look of any room you use it in. There are a few of butcher holes which are not noticeable through the fiber.

This sheepskin is being sold on consignment. A little about the farm: Tracey and Dan raise registered Gotland sheep on their small sustainable farmstead in the rolling hills of New Glarus, Wisconsin, which they named "Springstead" in celebration of the many springs on the property. They fell in love with Gotland sheep for their beauty, curiosity, and hardiness. Gotland lambs are born black and their wool lightens to various shades of gray curls. The Gotlands are good mothers and helpful partners in restoring the land. The sheep live a good life in open pastures and help to build the soil at Springstead. Ram lambs are harvested humanely on-site in the fall, and their hides are tanned respectfully at the Driftless Tannery. Each year the lambs are named based on a theme. These sheepskins were from ram lambs named after pastas: Rigatoni, Macaroni, Lasagna, Ravioli, Rotini, Gnocchi, Fettuccine, Mostaccioli, and Linguini. [Their mother ewes were mostly from the year of candy-themed names: Starburst, Godiva, Snickers, and Twizzler.]

Thank you so much for looking, and for supporting our journey into natural sheepskin. Our hides are hand made labors of love, from the fleshing stage, to washing, tanning and final stretching and buffing. It is an honor and pleasure to support the efforts of our farmers and butchers or rescue these items from the waste bin and turn them into beautiful, heirloom quality home goods.

*Gotland sheep originate from the small island of Gotland, set in the middle of the Baltic Sea, off the coast of Sweden. One of the Northern short-tailed breeds, their bloodlines date back to the Viking era.
